Remembering Bill Swain
Storyteller from Oneonta
NY
By Janet Glantz
Retired Children’s Librarian and
former member of Storytelling Center of Oneonta
Bill Swain was was the last Chairman of the Storytelling Center of
Oneonta. He was dedicated to The Art of Storytelling and influenced the next
generation of storytellers. Bill helped me coach many young troupes of
storytellers, The Otego Tale Weavers, and another group in Unadilla for
approximately 13 years. Every week he would tell stories, coach, and encourage
these young student storytellers. He always said, “You’ve Got to Tell Them
to Make Them Go Right.” Bill was so dedicated that he would even take the
School Bus, which was like riding a buckboard, with our noisy bunch of creative
students. We traveled to Albany, Delhi, and the Riverside School to perform and
to see professional storytellers. Bill loved to see these young storytellers
leave the nest and soar. He took great delight in their accomplishments. Many
of Bill’s students went on to use the skills they learned from Bill in Drama
and on the Debate Teams at the Unatego Jr. and Sr. High School . Some went on
to be Museum Interpreters and storytellers at summer camps. I know that the
students whose lives he touched will never forget Mr. Swain. Bill left a legacy
of humor, sharp-wit, and generosity of spirit. The stories he told remain with
us: Jack Tales and Grandfather Tales, told in his soft Southern accent, and
stories he spun from his life experiences. I treasure my memories of working,
and performing with Bill and I hope he is still,” Telling Them to Make Them Go
Right.”

Summer Book Suggestion
The Storytelling Animal: How
Stories make us Human
by Jonathan Gottschall.
And people are talking: The New Yorker:
[Gottschall’s] … thesis is that human beings are natural storytellers—that they
can’t help telling stories, and that they turn things that aren’t really
stories into stories because they like narratives so much. Everything—faith,
science, love—needs a story for people to find it plausible. Read more http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2012/05/can-science-explain-why-we-tell-stories.html#ixzz1wVaAtdwzhttp://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/06/magazine/06darwin.html?pagewanted=all
In Kirkus Review: [Gottschall’s]
thesis is that humans’ capacity to tell stories isn’t just a curious aspect of
our genetic makeup but an essential part of our being: We tell stories—in
fiction, in daydreams, in nightmares—as ways to understand and work through
conflicts, the better to be prepared when those conflicts arise in reality. https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/jonathan-gottschall/storytelling-animal/#review
